An interesting news came out from the #-Link-Snipped-# where Mozilla researcher Dr. Andreas Gal informed the users about an ambitious new project he's leading within Mozilla - "Boot To Gecko". B2G will be the open, complete and web based operating system. In short, it's Mozilla's answer to Google Chrome OS. In his post, Dr. Gal mentions that web has power to displace the single-vendor and proprietary stacks for app development. He continues by saying, "We need to find the gaps that keep web developers from being able to build apps that are --- in every way --- the equals of native apps built for the iPhone, Android, and WP7."#-Link-Snipped-#

The Boot to Gecko project is currently aimed at the mobile devices and it's partly based on Android - Google's OS designed from the mobile phones and tablets. The process of building the new web based OS has been categorized into major broad steps which includes -

[*]Developing New Web APIs: SMS, Telephony, NFC, Camera, Bluetooth, USB and so on.
[*]Privilege Model: Ensuring that new capabilities are safely exposed to applications and pages.
[*]Prototyping a low-level substrate for an Android-compatible device aka 'Booting'.
[*]Selective development of apps to harness the power of the new system

The project is still in infancy. It's going to take lot of collective efforts to build. The project is going to face lot of competition and comparisons from the Chrome OS project - already an ambitious project being worked on at Google. We hope that we get to see the first releases of B2G in the next few months. We'd like to hear your opinion about the B2G project.
