In these days of rapid technology development, the line of separation between Sci Fi and Science Facts is really getting blurred. Star trek is barely a nose ahead.
Nasa's NEXT Ion Drive (NASA’s Evolutionary Xenon Thruster) has completed a record 43,000 hours (that is FIVE years) non stop running in tests.

A giant step towards powering NASA’s next-gen spacecraft.
"To go where no man has gone before" and I do not mean the ladies' rest room!
