Great question—and a very smart one to ask early! If you’re planning to pursue engineering, the subjects you choose in high school will lay the foundation for your future studies. At any Singapore international high school, you’ll usually have access to globally recognized curricula like the IB (International Baccalaureate), IGCSE, or AP—all of which offer excellent preparation for engineering.
📘 Core Subjects You Should Definitely Take:
Mathematics (Higher Level if possible) This is the most important subject for any engineering discipline—whether it’s mechanical, civil, software, or aerospace. Focus on:
Algebra
Calculus
Trigonometry
Statistics
Physics Physics is crucial for almost all engineering branches, especially mechanical, electrical, and civil. It teaches you how things move, interact, and respond to forces.
Chemistry Important for chemical, environmental, materials, and biomedical engineering.
Computer Science / Programming Increasingly relevant in modern engineering fields, especially software, AI, and robotics. Most Singapore international high schools now offer coding or CS classes, either as electives or in the main curriculum.
💡 Bonus / Recommended Subjects:
Design & Technology – Great for hands-on learners, and relevant for product design, mechanical and industrial engineering.
Economics or Business – Helpful if you're thinking of entrepreneurship in engineering later on.
Environmental Systems & Societies (ESS) – Especially relevant if you’re considering sustainable or civil engineering.
🏫 Why Singapore International High Schools Are a Great Starting Point:
Many Singapore international high schools offer state-of-the-art labs, robotics clubs, coding bootcamps, and STEM-focused extracurriculars. These opportunities let you:
Build real projects
Join international competitions (like robotics or math olympiads)
Get hands-on experience early
Schools like UWCSEA, Stamford American International School, and Tanglin Trust School have excellent track records of placing students into top global engineering programs.
