Solar Powered Train Tunnel Goes Live In Belgium

Engineers in Belgium switched on the 3300 megawatt per hour, 2.1 mile long solar powered train tunnel yesterday. The tunnel is Europe's first and aims to reduce the carbon emission by 2,400 tons. The tunnel was actually built to prevent the high-speed line from falling trees in ancient jungles through which the line passes, has been fitted with over 16000 solar panels to generate electricity to power the trains. The high-speed train line running between Paris to Amsterdam passes through an ancient jungle. The trees would often fall on the railway track creating blockages. The tunnel was built to solve the problem by providing a shelter to the track & the trains passing.

16000 solar cells will provide enough energy to all the trains in Belgium for one day every year and also power the Antwerp station. The tunnel was turned green by the Belgian renewable energy company 'Infinity'. The company put many projects in London on hold to complete the work on priority. Following video shows the tunnel -
