Happy World IPv6 Day - June 8, 2011!

Yay! Today is June the 8th - World IPv6 Day and we wish all our readers a very happy IPv6 day. In case you have no clue what IPv6 is, it would help visiting #-Link-Snipped-#. Here's a short description of what is IPv6 and why it matters. When you access CrazyEngineers, you simply type www.CrazyEngineers.com which is very easy to remember address. However, the machines translate it to a complicated number like 74.123.567.23 (IP address) to identify the site uniquely. You can figure out that this number has limitations of roughly about 4 billion addresses. With the explosion of Internet, we’re running out of total number of addresses. In short, the Internet is now close to being ‘full’. The solution is IPv6.

IPv6 is “Internet Protocol Version 6?. The major difference between IPv6 and IPv4 is the difference of bits. IPv6 uses 128 bits while IPv4 uses only 32. A typical IPv6 address will look like: 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334. That is the IPv6 system is capable of 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 addresses. Switching to IPv6 is the long term solution however it needs lot of infrastructure upgrades from the network providers and we do not have enough time to do that.

World IPv6 Day

World IPv6 day is the trial day for the new protocol when major sites across the globe will start offering their content on both IPv4 & IPv6. These websites include Google, Facebook, Yahoo etc. The aim of world IPv6 day is to spread awareness about IPv6 and make the hardware manufacturers, ISPs, Operating System Vendors and web companies to be prepare their offerings for the new protocol. Once we run out of IPv4 web addresses, the long term solution is going to be IPv6 - which will offer more than 4 billion times more space.
