The data to be collected is important since it would be monitoring climate change, which led to the improvement of human and biodiversity health, energy and water management.  After three months, the control of the LDCM would be transferred to the Department of the Interior's US Geological Survey (USGS) when it goes fully operational and then the satellite would be renamed Landsat 8.

Advances made to the latest Landsat spacecraft were stressed by the NASA scientists, including the addition of the LCDM's Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS). With this launch, NASA anticipates new knowledge and applications to emerge with an increasing demand for the data.
