Engineers over at University of Sheffield have developed a method that uses ultrasound scans to measure, test and monitor the efficiency of your car's combustion engine. Rob Dwyer-Joyce, Professor of Lubrication Engineering, from the University's Department of Mechanical Engineering, who is working on this project, shared that we need to increase energy consumption in cars. Therefore, their method works by calculating how efficiently the engine's pistons are moving up and down inside their cylinders. They can now better understand the working of this lubricant inside the sealed chamber between piston rings and cylinder - A detailed study of which can in-turn can help engine manufacturers to have the perfect lubrication levels - not too much, not too less.

The engineers are working on recording and measuring the lubricant film by transmitting ultrasonic pulses through the cylinder wall from sensors attached to the outside. We think these mech engineers have developed a winner.
