Japan Prepares Robot To Slog At A Crippled Nuclear Reactor

A Japanese robotics lab has come up with a new emergency response sample named "Rosemary", which shall soon be employed at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in northern Japan. The robot matches a lawn mower in size, and has got four extended treaded feet that pivot up-down to assist it in tackling obstacles. An incline of 60 degrees is no big deal for the robot to climb on, plus it can also handle a 60 kg (132 pounds) weight over it. The robot has been tested on electronic and exposure grounds, and the conclusive outcome is that it could be used sans any shielding or protection, states Takeshi Nishimura, a researcher at the Future Robotics Technology Center, who also added that the robot will be forwarded to Fukushima in the coming months.

The Future Robotics Technology Center is showing off the functioning of the robot together with various other concepts at its newly built campus in the complex at the recently started Tokyo Skytree broadcasting tower. The center is associated with the Chiba Institute of Technology and it has even received government funding for robot development.
