DESIGN AND EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF PORTABLE SOLID BIO-MASS COOKSTOVE

Project Abstract / Summary : In today’s world, the entire energy requirements are being fulfilled through non-renewable source of energy (mainly fossil fuels). The demand for these fossil fuels is increasing day by day at a rapid rate. Therefore there is a need of an alternative source of energy (renewable). Some of these energy sources are solar, wind, tidal, geothermal, biomass etc. which can be utilized to substitute the fossil fuels. The search for alternative fuels has come to a conclusion with solar energy and biomass being the frontrunners.

Due to lack of technology and awareness regarding biomass and its derivatives, this field has not been tapped up to its true potential. Hence we are utilizing biomass energy in the form of pellets (sawdust, garden waste)which can be used as a fuel to run cooking stove to replace fossil fuels (LPG). These pellets are burned using gasification processes a fuel in specially designed biomass cooking stoves. Currently there are many such stoves in the market but they are not energy efficient (>35%). Therefore we are working on developing a biomass cook stove which will be more energy efficient (as perBIS). The challenge in this field is not only to develop such a stove but it should also be technologically feasible, environmentally sustainable, economically viable and socially acceptable.

Keywords: Renewable, biomass, pellets, gasification, energy-efficient.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : Today around 10 lakh women in rural areas suffer a lot of health problems due to conventional chulha used for cooking arising due to smoke. Providing LPG connections in those remote areas is next to impossible. So in order to find a solution to this issue, we came up with an idea of biomass fuel cook-stove. The biomass from their farms will be processed to convert it into the pellets and then these pellets are used as a fuel in an energy efficient stove so that it will be smokeless and will fit in Indian Standard norms. Hence we started working on the stove which will satisfy energy requirement of the consumer and benefiting the environment.

Project Highlights : Definitely, our project should win because not only it is technologically feasible and advanced but it also emphasizes on the social problems and energy crisis problems in today's scenario. So we are not advancing the technology alone, but integrating the different approaches for better life style, towards green life!
