9-Gigapixel Image Of The Milky Way cuts us down to size!

The enormity of the Universe is on show in this 9-Gigapixel image of the milky way. Obtained with the VISTA survey telescope at ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile, this image was constructed painstakingly combining thousands of images taken through special IR filters to see through the dust that obscures pictures taken with normal optical telescopes.
If this monumental mosaic were printed out at the average resolution of a standard book it would measure a mind-boggling 9 x 7 meters.
