VMware WSX Lets You Access Virtual Machines Through Browsers

VMware is working on a new virtualization concept, named as WSX, which will make it possible to access Virtual Machines remotely through a web browser. The new implementation is based on HTML 5 Canvas elements and web sockets which makes it compatible with almost all the web browsers.

In Vmware Workstation 8, VMware provided the ability to share Virtual Machines across a network. But this time, they have made it bigger as now you can access your Virtual Machine from anywhere. Christian Hammond, developer at VMware, wrote in a WSX: Virtual Machines in Your Browser | ChipLog, “The evolution of tablets and smart phones doesn’t means the end of desktop and servers, but it does change how people are accessing their data and application.”

WSX (a tentative name which may change in future) is installed in your network as mini web server. It works as an interface which helps you to access your Workstation shared Virtual Machines and VMs on vSphere/ESXi 5. You can completely control the VMs through WSX, you can suspend them, switch them off and use them for your work. The best thing about the product is that it all works through a web browser and it doesn’t even need any plug-ins. WSX uses modern web technologies like HTML Canvas and web sockets which make your browser a full-on remote control for your VMs. The WSX server, which acts as an inter mediator, interacts with shared VMs and relays the data to the browser running on client machine. In video streaming, WSX provides near-native quality and framerates.

According to Christian, the product is working fine with Chrome, Firefox and Safari. In tablets it works well with iPads running iOS 5+. Work is still in progress to make it compatible with Android. Only the Linux version is available till now.  If you want to test it then you can download the Linux version of VMware Workstation Technology Preview #-Link-Snipped-#.
