UPNA Researchers Assert That A Coating Can Remove Air Pollutants

UPNA-Public University of Navarre researchers have come up with a kind of coating to be employed on the construction materials which totally stamps out specific air pollutants as soon as it comes in contact with sunlight. The nanoparticle coatings were conceived from the Ecofotomat project, which concerned the university and the L’Urederra R+D Centre, and also the construction company Obras y Servicios TEX.

Researcher Javier Goicoechea stated that the coatings possess special nanoparticles with a photocatalytic effect, which when gets exposed to light, triggers a chain of chemical reactions that disintegrate the dirt in air, and also degrades the bacteria/fungi present on the surface where it's coated.

As per the statement, concrete was employed as the primary construction material. L’Urederra produced the nanoparticles and modified them so that they could be included into the coatings, while TEX offerred the concrete and the technical know-how regarding the building material. Efforts were taken to make this coating look like paint. One positive of this coating is, being thin(with dimensions less than a micron), it adjusts according to the profile of the material. The project should be finished in June 2013.
