Twitter Direct Message Character Limit Removed
Twitter has announced an important change to its direct messaging feature. The direct messages or DMs as known among the twitterati, are no longer limited to 140 characters. Twitter's product manager Sachin Agarwal posted a message on official blog informing about the new changes. Note that the regular tweets however will have to adhere to the 140 character limit. Direct Messages feature allows twitter users to hold private conversations with each other.
We learn that the limit still exists - but it's been upped from 140 characters per DM to 10,000 characters. Facebook messenger however allows up to 20,000 characters in every message. These changes will be rolled out across various twitter clients including the mobile and desktop applications. The third party Twitter applications are likely to get upgraded in the next few days to support the enhanced character limit.
Removal of the 140 character limit was one of the most requested update which Twitter kept ignoring for a long time. However, the company did roll out #-Link-Snipped-# changes in the recent past to Twitter DMs. These changes included allowing DMs with any user; controlled by a privacy setting and a dedicated direct message button the the official Android and iOS apps. In January this year, Twitter allowed private #-Link-Snipped-# using the DM feature. This feature allows anyone to hold a private conversation with up to 20 twitter users at a time.
Agarwal makes it clear that the changes to the DM will not affect the public facing side of the service. Twits will continue to be strictly of 140 characters. The global rollout is likely to take about a few weeks. All you need to do is just upgrade your twitter client to the latest and then simply wait for the DM limit enhancement to make it to your account.
We'd guess that the enhanced character limit will allow small teams to ditch messaging services and use Twitter for all their inter-group conversations. Business that offer official support over Twitter will now be able to use this feature more effectively with detailed responses.
Do let us know your thoughts on the new DM character limit and whether Twitter should consider enhancing the character limit on regular tweets.
