Transformers in solar projects

i was wondering how the transformers used in solar projects work? i read that they have electrostatic screens inside.. but how does it help to step up/step down the voltage?

Transformers are used to step up or step down electric current/voltage or isolate electric circuits.

Transformers are not directly usable with a solar cell output. Solar cells converts sunlight to DC and charge a battery. This stored electrical energy in DC is converted to AC by an inverter. Here is where the transformer comes in to play. The output should be exactly the same voltage and phase to connect it to the existing grid. The inverter converted AC will be stepped up or stepped down to meet this requirement with the help of a transformer. Transformer actually is the final link between solar power source and house hold or industrial circuits or the power grid.
