Sri Lanka has approved the SAARC Satellite Project; which was a crucial requirement for the project to take off and mandatory for registration with International Telecommunication Union (ITU). ISRO now waits for the confirmation from other countries that includes Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives and Bhutan. The SAARC satellite, as you'd guess, was proposed by PM Narendra Modi as a 'communication-cum-meteorology' satellite for the entire SAARC region.

Kiran Kumar, the chairman of ISRO informed that the team working on the project is hopeful of launching the satellite by December 2016. Dr. Kumar was addressing the Indian Economic Convention 2015 - An Interactive Session on Space, Bio-Technology and Indian Railways.

Kumar further informed that the ITU registration will ensure that India gets a spot in the orbit where the SAARC satellite can be placed. Once complete, the satellite will be a 'gift' from India to its neighbours.

Back in March 2015, Kumar had said that that the specs of the satellite will be finalised and the launch will happen in about 18 months. He further said that India is also planning to build an observatory ground station in Fiji and in Vietnam. The discussions are on with the African countries; but the actual location has not been finalised yet.
