• Sony has now officially launched the Sony Smartwatch 2, the successor to the not-so-popular Sony Smartwatch. An extension of your smartphone, the SmartWatch 2 will show you the notifications that you usually receive on your phone. It also lets you control the music playing on it. When you get a notification, the SmartWatch 2 will gently vibrate on your wrist to let you know. It can be paired up with Android devices using Bluetooth and NFC. Sony expertly calls it "Made For Android" on its offical website. At the event in Delhi, Sony declared the offical price in India to be Rs. 14,990 and said that the gadget is being made available starting today.

A lot has been said and discussed about the Smartwatch. It has been repeatedly compared with the Samsung Galaxy Gear, which unlike the Smartwatch is only limited to the Sony's smartphones. As we start to build the comparison chart of the Galaxy Gear and Smartwatch 2 on the basis of the specs and features of the two big touchscreen watches, we are unable to land up on a clear winner. We are still in the nascent stage of the wearable computing story. On one hand, there's the Samsung Galaxy Gear's advanced features, but on the other there's Sony Smartwatch's compatibilty across Android devices, which gives it more edge and traction.

Anyway, coming back to the Sony Smartwatch 2 specs, we see that it has dimensions - 42 x 9 x 41 mm and along with the wrist strap, it is pretty lightweight at 122.5 grams. It has support for its own native apps, which can be downloaded from Google Play. Running on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and later, the 1.6 inch LCD screen (220 x 176 resolution) is water-resistant and the gadget is made up of aluminium and there's support for Bluetooth 3.0 and micro USB charging. For fitness buffs, you can use the SmartWatch 2 to not only track your workout by using third-party apps, but it also acts as a pedometer, allowing you to measure the number of steps you might have taken during your long walk.

As can be expected of a watch, it shows the time, and also lets users pick from a number of different watch faces, ranging from the standard analogue look to a more modern digital look. Now, that's all about the Sony Smartwatch 2 tech specs and features. There's some more news from the company that is making raves - Sony Xperia Z1 - The Waterproof Flagship With 20MP Exmor RS Sensor And BIONZ Processing Engine, which has an offical price in India tag of Rs. 45000. Looks like there's a fierce competition in progress between Samsung and Sony to win over the wearable gadget as well as smartphone market. Till we find out who ends up with the best sales chart, take a look at the following video from Sony -

Advantages of Sony's smartwatch over Samsung's Galaxy Gear:
    1. The time is always displayed on screen, in Galaxy gear the display gets switched off when idle and you have to jerk you hand in "I want to see the time" kind of way to make the screen active again.
    2. Smartwatch works on any Android, but Galaxy Gear limited to Samsung's own Galaxy range of smartphones.
    3. Smartwatch is priced lower than the Galaxy Gear.
    4. Multiple app support, over 300 apps are available exclusively of this iteration of smartwatch.
    5. As compared to 25 hours backup of Samsung Galaxy Gear this one is claimed to last 2 to 3 days.
