Reddit Protests SOPA & PIPA, Plans Blackout On Jan. 18

While the Government is still intent on passing the SOPA law which aims to provide better authority to legislative bodies over the internet, the protests are not fading out either. Reddit, the popular social networking and link-sharing site has planned blacking out reddit on January 18th from 8am–8pm EST (1300–0100 UTC). So, instead of the buzzing energy that usually fills Reddit, they will be displaying a simple message about how the PIPA/SOPA legislation would shut down sites like reddit. To create awareness about how serious the issue really is, they also plan to link to resources to learn more, and suggest ways to take action.

January 18th has been chosen as the date to action the complete blackout as it is the same day when industry leaders are likely to discuss SOPA before the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Reddit will host the live video stream of the #-Link-Snipped-#  Reddit also plans to highlight various community initiatives like meetups to visit Congressional offices, campaigns to contact companies supporting PIPA/SOPA and other measures that would help fuel the protest.

A 'Blackout' is Reddit's way of showing people how censorship is going to effect sites like Reddit and others. Though, a Blackout is a difficult initiative for Reddit, they believe focusing the protest on the judgment day will help put through the voice of the community. More popular sites like AOL, Ebay, Google, Facebook, Yahoo, PayPal and Twitter are expected to join in the 'Blackout' protest. Being a part of the protest would require these sites to stop providing services, but not simply shut down. Though, visitors may well be prepared to see anti-SOPA messages displayed on these websites.

Most people who are outside the US who cannot be part of campaigns are planning to suspend activities on their Twitter, Facebook account during the Blackout window.

Spread the word. SOPA is coming.
