Philips & BASF Introduce New Dimension In Car Lighting

Providing at two-way lighting concept for car roofs is a great deal for the automobile industry especially the 4-wheeler segment. BASF and Philips together have achieved success for developing a new OLED technology that allows panels to be fitted to car roofs. These panels are dual performers. Produces dim and cool light when switched on and becomes a transparent piece of glass when switched off. The panel not only serves as a piece of glass rather it allows a clear view of the out-of-car environment.

OLEDs are basically a subset of Light Emitting Diodes which produces light by applying current to a film of organic compounds. OLEDs prove to be a distributed light source as a result of which illumination provided by OLEDs are soft and even. In addition, the film is very thin measuring about 1.8 mm for which solar cells can be embedded to it also.

This cute combination of daylight and OLED offers a driver to enjoy a unique open-space feeling. During day time the panel embedded solar cells are used to charge a battery and during night, the panel pleasantly lights the car with a soft fused light. Dr. Dietrich Bertram, General Manager of Philips OLED lighting said that this project provides impressive evidence of new possibilities with OLEDs and illustrates the power of Philips Lumiblade technology to help create a new dimension in lighting applications. It’s time for us to wait and see what new advances are brought by Philips to the field of lighting.
