Google announced on its<a href="https://blog.chromium.org/2012/01/real-time-communications-in-chrome.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Chromium Blog: Real-time Communications in Chrome</a> that it will be adding support for real-time communication on the Chrome browser for dev channel. Google made WebRTC open source last summer and has been constantly working towards integrating the technology in its products.

Google believes that WebRTC includes the fundamental building blocks for high quality communications on the web and can easily support network, audio and video components used in voice and video chat applications. As a part of a browser, these components can be accessed through a Javascript API giving developers an opportunity to design their own WebRTC apps. Independent of custom, OS specific, proprietary plug-ins, developers are provided with an easy way to build and maintain their apps.

With WebRTC, Google introduces a way for video/voice communication through the browser, avoiding the need for stand-alone clients like Skype and Tango. WebRTC implements Javascript and HTML5 to make real-time communication possible for any browser. Mozilla and Opera are also supporting the WebRTC technology, hence apps that are built on WebRTC can be installed on not only Chrome but Firefox and Opera too.

WebRTC is under consideration for a standard status at the W3C and the IETF, though Google admits that the technology is still under development and will progress based on the  feedback by developers and the standards process. Companies like Polycom, Vonage, Vehix.com, Firespotter, Siemens, Nimbuzz and PCCW are active participants in developing browser based solutions using WebRTC.

Reports indicate that WebRTC would also enable streaming services like OnLive to deliver games straight into a browser, killing the need for downloading a separate client.
