Engineers at the Rice University in association with Israel's Technion University &Â Air Force Research Laboratory have developed the nanotube fibers (see picture) with totally unique and awesome properties: 10x the electrical conductivity of the graphite fibers and whooping 100x the strength of steel. But that's not enough - the graphite fibers are brittle while the new nanotube fibers are flexible like your cotton thread. The team's already imagining possible uses in the automobile, aerospace and medical equipment industries.

The fibers took about a decade in the making. The research team says that the fibers are 1/6th the weight of steel and have heat & electrical conductivity to rival the metal conductors. These can act as light-activated semiconductors, drug-delivery devices and even sponges to soak up oil!
