Motherboard and Processor Upgrade

My friend is planning on upgrading his CPU (motherboard and Processor)..His budget his around 10k to 12k..I zeroed in on Gigabyte S series motherboard and AMD phenom X4 9650...though i am skeptical about the performance of amd processors , given the low amnt of cache and lower clock speeds..shall i ask him to go for a higher end core 2 duo processor or stick to this one..higher clock rate is needed as this computer would be mostly used for gaming and stuff..and soon he would be adding a graphics card too..please give ur valuable suggestions...

    12k Indian rupees? That'll be equivalent to around $230 yeah. The AMD phenom should be enough. Just make sure he has suitable cooling solutions. Gaming focuses more on the gfx card anyway.
