  • I've been to many campuses and have interacted with many students. Since past few years, there's a trend forming; especially among Indian engineering students: IT Jobs - no matter what their engineering discipline is.

I've serious issues with this. That's the reason, I've decided to start this thread and see what are the factors engineers consider while opting for a career.

    Is it Money?
    Is it Work Environment?
    Is it Nature Of Work?
    Anything else?
    Location?

First things first , most of the people except creamy layer look for just jobs , no matter what all the listed options are!
They dont care of anything they do just care for getting into a job!

The next looking for options starts when they complete some time in the organization, like Nature of work and Location for first 2 or 3 years , then they look for package the higher the money they get that happier they are!

Next people look for satisfaction and enjoying the work they do but unfortunately that will be too late!!

if i were given a choice between the IT job and a career in core sector i would chose the latter even if the pay package is not so attractive.
i mean what is the use of you studying civil or mechanical or any other engineering and sticking to a safe job in the IT sector.
one should take up a career that makes him feel satisfied and happy...it should reflect one's passion.😀

so for me what matters is the nature of job 😁

one thing i have noticed in the campus recruitment all branch student sit and if they got select ..and after for the core , they don't get any chance generally due to the some college criteria (after placement you can't sit more) or not find any company so they start their career as in IT firm.

Well.. I decided to play safe. After getting 16 or so job applications rejected, the only one offer I got (in the IT sector) seemed to be a wise choice. This is considering many people I know still looking for jobs.

I believe its important to get experience when you first join the job market. Once you get some experience and value, you can do whatever you want after.. be it in your core discipline or whatever.

Biggest factors luring engineering student is fat-pay packets and high-life associated with IT industry, secondly,IT industry have been able to market themselves very well and every IT company is providing more-or-less same privileges which is not with other engineering sectors, initially everything is merry but after few years everything become monotonous and routine.Anyhow, students are doing engineering to get jobs, which is very well exploited by IT cos.

    Consider this as a factor.

Are you happy doing what you are being paid to do?

I remained happy when I was earning far less than my last drawn salary ( 😁 ) only because I loved what I was doing. I think its one of the most important factors!

I have an incident to narrate( as usual)
I had my appraisal meeting other day. As soon as I entered the room , my manager passed a comment " So you are here for appraisal or for asking for a salary hike". I giggled and he continued ( i have no clue why he told me )-" appraisal doesn't mean salary hike - it is more of assessing what you are and what you want to be in next coming years. salary is a part of it. so now tell me what you want and how can i help you to meet your vision for next year if you have any". Thanks he asked me.

Everyone works for money -right and that is very true, but I guess a little dose of satisfaction and happiness when we work is also needed to keep us going.

    * sorry i think i became too philosophical here* 😐

I read an article by Mr.Gopalakrishnan, the executive director of Tata sons.
It was an article about why people are too frequently hopping jobs nowadays. Here I quote him..

"A lot of people say that the reason they are changing their current job is that they are not happy doing their current job.
But if I ask myself if job is a place to be happy, if I think hard, the answer comes to be no. Job is a place to earn money for a living,
to earn a reputation, to advance one's career and to improve one's position in the society."
Of course, here the context is different. He probably meant that happiness in job should not be a criterion for switching jobs frequently.
But on thinking, it baffles me too. We actually work to earn a livelihood. So, why should we bother about being happy when doing it?
This view certainly seems stupid, but just think about it..

    @ SS

with all due respect to Mr.Gopalakrishnan - we will never know if computers are happy doing what they do. You end up spending 8- 10 hours a day at work and leave another 6 hours for sleep . left is app 8 hours and deduce another 2 hors for travel. So for all you life- is this 6 hours you are living happily????

I would wish my 8 -10 hrs of work is happy as well, after all i work to live and i don't live to work

Well, for me the few most important factors that came to my mind were
    - getting exposure to working environment as soon as possible(irrespective of what work) because got too much tired of studying since nursery to engineering final year.
    - zeal of learning what I wasn't aware of and I have never learned ever before in my life.
    - Money ("Better money, better future" 😀 ). Making myself independent. Not asking my parents any more for money.
    - Now stressing on second point- if learning was of no use for me and was not matching with the skills I am(or can be) good at then definitely get frustrated with my work and would change my factors and priorities to better career growth.

So overall, factors keep on changing time-to-time and person-to-person. 😀

one should take up a career in which he is interested that makes him feel satisfied and happy.
and on the basis of this I choose my favorite field (IT field)

    I disagree saurav.

The question was - Are you happy doing what you are being paid to do?

Not - Are you happy with what you are being paid?

    There is a difference 😀
