LIGO Team Wins Accolades For Validating Einstein's Theory of General Relativity

The world of fundamental physics and the scientists and researchers working in this domain experienced a major breakthrough by detecting gravitational waves, a 100 years after the renowned researcher Albert Einstein predicted that they exist. The research has proven to be pathbreaking and has helped the scientists Einstein's Theory of General Relativity. To mark this special event in the history of science, many organisations and governments of the world have come forward to acknowledge this research work, shower praises and honour the people involved in this project.

'LIGO' stands for Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory. Built between 1994 and 2002, the LIGO lab is operated by Caltech and MIT and is supported by the National Science Foundation. On September 14th, 2015 the advanced LIGO detectors were able to capture a very clear and strong signal of the gravitational waves.

Among the accolades, a group of 1000+ engineers and scientists that form a special team called the LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC) won 2 major honours - a $3 million Special Breakthrough Prize, and the 2016 Gruber Foundation Cosmology Prize.

It is not being said that the research work opens up the gates of a completely new era in the field of gravitational-wave astronomy that will help our scientists unravel the deepest and darkest mysteries of the early universe

A couple of months back, the LIGO team declared that Indian Cabinet has approved the construction of India To House The World's 3rd LIGO To Detect Elusive Gravitational Waves and it is said to be technically feasible for LIGO-India to go online by the end of 2023. NSF Director, France A. Córdova has also signed a MoU that secures India as the site of the third LIGO detector.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently congratulated the Indian scientists, who are among the recipients of this prize. Check the following video -
