Flyme 5.0 Being Rolled Out - Its First Destination Is Meizu MX5

Chinese smartphone maker Meizu developed its own firmware with Flyme OS, the first version of which was released in June 2012. Flyme's simple yet beautiful design was praised by critics, but Meizu users have had an on and off relationship with the OS. Since the last few months, everyone was anticipating the arrival of the new Flyme version 5.0 and finally it has arrived. Meizu MX5 users have started receiving the Flyme 5.0 OS on their phones. It is a huge 936 MB update and if certain sources are to be believed, it should roll out gradually to other popular Meizu smartphones in the next couple of months.

The new Flyme OS version is - Flyme 5.0.0.1A. The company had sent out an early beta of Flyme 5.0 last month, but it was very unstable. This version is said to be more stable and the folks over at GizChina have also released a ChangeLog for the new version. Let's see what it covers -

Flyme 5.0 gets a new notification bar for drop-down and pull-down notices when there are multiple alerts. With notify management, users can change the settings to suit their needs. Some of the new smart features includes - multitasking, automatically named folders, shake phone to arrange icons on the screen, split screen mode and floating notices.

The lock screen on Flyme 5.0 brings music display and lyrics directly on the locked screen. With the settings here, users can select if they want to display the notification in lock screen or to notify only when it's a bright screen.

A new customer service assistant has been provided that supports online chat and lets user create new accounts. Moreover, users can copy the code from floating notices and paste them in quick reply messages. The Smart SMS menu has been made more powerful too.

Coming to the features related to making & receiving calls, the Flyme 5.0 brings a new suspended dial plate design to the phone dial pad. It supports slide to switch contacts or yellow pages or call records. The new Flyme also brings one-touch access to online yellow pages. It displays online identification number and users can also make error correction in the contact details. If an user wants to record a call, they can choose to do so via 'call recording' feature and check it later under 'recorded messages'.

Flyme 5.0 also supports changing of telephone network. It also brings a variety of features such as preferred networks, network sharing, volume category, default application and analog color space. The search on the new OS update brings a 4 x 2 weather search widget, a new search home button and a clean interface for showing search results in a card format.

Another interesting update in Flyme 5.0 is called 'Mobile Butler'. Various features under this module are - access rights management, harassment interception for blocking unknown or hidden numbers, Garbage clean white list for mobile data cleanup, traffic management, mobile speed acceleration etc.

Among various features that need support from the smartphone's hardware, there are Mirror, Compass, Measurement Scale, Magnifier, Flashlight and Shortcuts. Even the native browser on Flyme 5.0 has received a new design with window tag optimisation and a new toolbar at the bottom designed fo intuitive operation.

Coming to the update related to the smartphone camera - Flyme 5.0 brings new GIF shooting mode, ability to set new time watermark, new voice camera switch, avoid duplication by flash memory settings and manual mode for adjusting saturation, white balance and contrast as per the requirement.

The official App Store brings a feature that lets the user search for the most beautiful app for a particular task. A new Applications Tags tab shows details page for easy viewing of similar applications and when downloading a new app, it shows the permissions that you are granting to the app before it gets installed.

With a new 'loss reporting mode' will let user temporarily restore the phone to its factory state and seal all of user's private data. A new feature called 'Intelligent Alerts' let you control the phone's sound without knowing the exact location. An intelligent face capture feature will open the smart camera and start clicking pictures of the area it is in.

There are many such updates to the Mail, Calendar, Notes and other settings. Since this is a heavy update, it is recommended that you keep your phone's battery fully charged before initiating the update process. Overnight works best.
