Are IITs the superior most?

it is usually considered that iit's mostly provide us with great opportunities. Is the scope of a normal engineering student doing something big very less in india?

Looks like a debate topic to me, hence moved to the debate section on CrazyEngineers. For this discussion / debate to be more fruitful; the description should not be very limited.

Yes, because that's what the data says. Most of the engineering graduates from IIT get good placements and pay packages.

Can you define a 'normal' engineering student? Assuming that you mean a non-IITan, we need more clarity on above statement. In general, the number of non-IIT people in India who've achieved big things in life outnumber the IITans. It all depends on what you mean by 'doing something big'.

    Not really.
IITs achieve nothing. It is the person that achieves. It is possible that persons with such desire to 'achieve' may choose IIT as one of the tasks.

There are many aspects that govern success in life.
Your nurturing environment is one of the main aspects.

IIT's are inherently prescribed as a top university because train their students well and their alumni usually go on to "do something big". This does not mean a non-IITian can't do the same, but the college you go to plays a huge role in your future. That is for sure.
So, as long as the college you go to has, can and will provide you with adequate knowledge and resources, you can achieve big. Anyone can.

IITs have exceptional teachers. As in, the general qualification one must have to be employed as an "Asst. professor" is a Ph.D + Post-Doc experience + research publications. Then after a few years, you get promoted to a "Professor". But if you look around in general Engg colleges these days, graduates of the last year join as asst. professors/professors in the same college! On a B.E/B.Tech degree! What sort of expertise/experience are they supposed to pass on to the students who are separated from such professors by only a couple of years? That is not the case with IITs/IIScs/NITs, since they fall under govt. administration, they have to adhere to the strict sense of the word when appointing such teachers. As such, the teachers have the necessary expertise to guide students. And that is the difference between IITs and the rest. One cannot deny the headstart a student gets when he/she learns from the best.

As for the individual, apart from great quality education, there seems to be hardly anything that is served differently in the IITs. There are ample examples of "normal" engg students achieving exceptionally great things.

While IITs provide good benefits like network of intellectuals and alumni in big companies, brand name, nurturing Engineering talent etc., it is only one side of the coin. There is a quote saying 'you can bring horse to the lake but you can't make it drink water', if one thinks success of student is in getting good placement and manage high level things, then IITs are one of the superior, if innovation and collective effort of a bunch of students to come up with world-changing ideas is considered the key then IITs are among the very good Univs (because creativity is a student thing). But one thing for sure, in current education system one can't succeed by being frugal, defensive and wasting time.
