    When is Engineers Day celebrated in India?

    Engineers Day is celebrated in India on 15th September. It’s celebrated in memory of India’s finest civil engineer, Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. He was popularly known as MV, the initials of his name.

    MV was born on 15 September 1861. He had a successful career spanning several decades. He was an expert in irrigation design, reservoir design, dam construction, drinking water and drainage design.

    He played an instrumental role in construction of the Krishnraja Sagar (KRS) Dam on Cauvery river - without using cement and smelting iron ore without coal.

    After his death in 1962, the Government of India declared 15 September as Engineers Day India. He was also awarded India’s highest civilian award “Bharat Ratna” in 1955.

    Every year, Indian engineers all over the world celebrate engineers day in memory of Dr. M. Visvesvaraya in offices, colleges and universities by showing gratitude to fellow engineers, organising events, conducting online and offline seminars, conferences, debates and competitions.

    Why is Engineers Day celebrated?

    Engineers Day is celebrated to acknowledge the contribution of engineers in the development of the nation. Engineering is the most sought after profession which has generated tons of employment opportunities in multiple sectors, from agriculture, medicine to aerospace.

    Engineering is the backbone of several industries. From design, development of machines for the manufacturing industries to writing the software for automation; engineers have made their mark.

    Engineering is directly and indirectly responsible for a major contribution to India’s GDP.

    Here in the United States, we have engineers week that runs from third Sunday of February till Fourth Saturday of the same month. The theme every year is celebrated to recognise the achievements of engineers and their overall contribution to the society.

    It's an event coordinated by DiscoverE, a non-profit that works to promote engineering as a career choice among American youngsters. Engineers week is a tradition being followed by the technical community in US since 1951.
