When is Engineers Day celebrated in India?
Engineers Day is celebrated in India on 15th September. It’s celebrated in memory of India’s finest civil engineer, Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. He was popularly known as MV, the initials of his name.
MV was born on 15 September 1861. He had a successful career spanning several decades. He was an expert in irrigation design, reservoir design, dam construction, drinking water and drainage design.
He played an instrumental role in construction of the Krishnraja Sagar (KRS) Dam on Cauvery river - without using cement and smelting iron ore without coal.
After his death in 1962, the Government of India declared 15 September as Engineers Day India. He was also awarded India’s highest civilian award “Bharat Ratna” in 1955.
Every year, Indian engineers all over the world celebrate engineers day in memory of Dr. M. Visvesvaraya in offices, colleges and universities by showing gratitude to fellow engineers, organising events, conducting online and offline seminars, conferences, debates and competitions.
