Why not surf the web and find out what AJAX is. If you know Javascript, I think AJAX will be a lot easier to understand.

AJAX - Asynchronous Javascript and XML
    For example,
in a normal webpage, if a form is submitted, the entire page will submit and another page will load. until that, the user is waiting and any other activities in the site are blocked.
What AJAX does is , it asynchronously submits the data to the server and gets the data back. Also the page is usable. The page is not blocked from using the page. There is no need for the user to wait until the page finishes loading.
    To work in AJAX,
    you should know HTML, Javascript.
in HTML you should know the Document object Model (DOM) clearly, which is the key concept for the Web 2.0 based programming. HTML is just the markup language which does not give you flexibility. DOM is necessary for handling any events (mouse clicks, keypress etc), manipulating Objects in the page( show/hide, Move, resize, refresh, clear contents) etc.
    So start with
    1. HTML Basics,
    2. Javascript basics (language constructs)
    3. Then DOM bascis.
    4. While learning DOM, you have to use Javascript to work with DOM.
    5. Now AJAX.

AJAX with any server side language like PHP, JSP, ASP.NET will give you the real power.

    Good luck
