What kind of technology is used in pedometer apps?

From what I understand, a pedometer app uses the accelerometer sensor for counting the steps. The app gathers information about the direction and speed in which the smartphone is moving as well as the angle in which the phone is held.
The app monitors the change in accelerometer and thereby counts the steps.

To answer your second questions: Any smartphone that has a built-in accelerometer can run the pedometer app.

Note: Gravity sensor is an accelerometer.

But a lot of sites when they start talking about the code built for pedometer talk about usage of special kind of sensor used in nexus 5 with android 4.4 which gives it accuracy in finding out results. This is the fact that confuses me. Is this somehow related with hall sensor for accuracy apart from accelerometer.
