Wave Glider Robot From Liquid Robotics For Cheap Oceanography

With the declining environmental conditions and rise of population to over 7 billion, there has been a need to monitor the atmosphere which includes air, ground and oceans. Monitoring the conditions of air and earth is not much difficult and is inexpensive too as most parts of the planet is accessible by some means or the other and ground covers only one-fourth of our planet. But accessing the oceans has been a huge challenge for researchers due technological challenges and the expenses needed for setting up devices for the monitoring.

Now Liquid Robotics have developed an autonomous robot named Wave Glider for the purpose of carrying of such difficult operations in various scenarios. This technology does not require any humans to be present with the robot at the time of operation. The device seems like an advanced surfboard covered with solar panels and another section which remains 22 feet under water. This section consists of some wings and is attached to the upper surfboard section by a cable. This robot thus generates all its power from sun and the ocean.

The Wave Glider can be controlled remotely by just logging in from any part of the world. This enables the Glider to be placed at any part of the world and it could travel for longer span of time without the need of fuelling up or regular maintenance as it's made of inexpensive materials. This would also enable to place multiple number of Wave Gliders in large areas for various uses like search and rescue, harbour security and many such fields.

Here's a video describing the technology:
