Waterproof Mobiles - Thoughts?

Sony's 'the company' that really cares about the phones that get damaged once they go wet. That's the reason they've launched a new phone, Xperia ZR that's water resistent. Most of the people I know, who own expensive smartphones, take care of their phone more than they care for their own lives; let alone dropping it in water. Now, there ARE people who'd ultimately, accidentally drop their phones in a pond or a bucket of water - but I'm not sure if it makes sense to go for a waterproof mobile to take care of that possibility.

Xperia ZR grows on Xperia Z which is also a waterproof mobile. The intension of this post is to know a general opinion on the need for water resistent mobile phones; unless, of course, if you are a wannabe underwater photographer.

Charging HIGH for feature like, Waterproof, scratch free is insane.

The fact is mobile companies needs some features to increase the price, and the general mentality is the costlier the mobile, the better it would be.

For me, the top screen should be water resistant, and it shouldn't happen that couple of water drops would force you to throw in garbage bin. but, paying 40 grand for an waterproof mobile doesn't make any sense. I am not going to keep mobile in my pocket while doing swimming.

I agree that this is one of the mobile feature should be there in 40 grand phone but here is the catch.

There was a quote that "Smartphones are making people dumb".
Actually mobile companies making people dumb. Each year either Apple, Samsung or whatever... they come with an extra feature and show to people that this is gonna change their live.
Isn't it Apple 5 or Galaxy SIII should have came been come with full HD screen but they didn't because, If they would have provided full HD feature 6-8 months back who will be buying AWESOME next Apple 5s/6 or Galaxy S4.
Same with Sony, these above feature should be released with XperiaZ only, but they are releasing with next version of this so people with big pocket feel low pride with their 10 month old phone and throw it to buy a new one.

If I am getting a waterproof phone, I will want to use it only for recording videos and taking pictures underwater. Does Xperia ZR feature a decent camera?
If not, only safety-freaks will be buying this phone.

Because if you think about it, it just makes more sense to have a phone that can do anything rather than a phone for different activities.

I wont dive into the sea or a pool to take pictures. I have to take into account my breath too. So clicking a picture diving into the sea to test your phone and its features is not a good idea. Sony has always been an underdog if we compare it to the other big names. If they really want to progress and make money out of their technology, they can do their best in Camera Pixels and the Sound Quality. ๐Ÿ˜€

Cell phones can fall in water. I don't deny that. But what is its probability? It is Negligible. Spending such huge money for a water proof phone is justified if some one is that rich. By the way, Motorola already have an android phone which is waterproof at around INR 16K.

My Nokia E63 is definitely not water proof. But it survived a plunge a few months ago. Completely submerged in a bucket of water my phone stayed there for about forty seconds. I removed the battery, disassembled and dried the circuits. When I put it back, it worked like a charm! I'm quite happy that I bought it just for INR 8K and still is kind of water resistant ๐Ÿ˜

Just because a phone is water resistant, I wouldn't spend such a huge sum.

If not testing in swimming pool, almost all high end phones are unofficially survive from mist and little water and rain. No doubt in that.

    I am looking smartphone with (Dust+water+scratch+drop)*Proof + under 12K ๐Ÿ˜ , I would buy for home.

That's called product evolution via iterations - saves the company money which otherwise would have gone down the drain in research if the market is not willing to pay for it.

There was a concept called code-less phones a few years ago. Don't know if it still exists. Back in the days, we used to have a Panasonic Code-less phone at our home in Kuwait. One day after returning from school, I could not find the phone anywhere when I wanted to make a call. My mom was at home and even she couldn't understand where it disappeared. It was almost lunchtime and my dad got back home from work. We kept all the dishes at the dining table, and sat to eat. When my mom dipped the spoon into the pot of sambar, she found something thick inside. On further investigation, we reclaimed our code-less phone that was left dipped in sambar for almost 3 hours by my good neighboring kid who had spent some time that morning with my mom. On proper cleaning and applying of a 'particular solution', the phone was reclaimed and it still works today.

So if you're thinking of buying a code-less Xperia ZR to use at home under such circumstances, I'd say yes!

I agree with you that having any extra feature is always good. But the thing that matters is, does it worth spending that much for those extra features??.

You can buy all you want. With time the rates will change. But I've seen how some really careless folks use their gadgets and end up wasting lots of cash; to them any price with protection is priceless!
