Use Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera On CE. No IE, Please!

One of the big issues we have faced ever since CE's inception is to make it usable for everyone and also a big part of it is browser compatibility. However that resulted in making changes to the site and extra work just to make the site look fine in all the browsers. The most trouble was caused by Internet Explorer 6. [IMG]

Finally in around March 2010, we decided that we'll drop support for IE browser and only support top browsers in the market like Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari. That was a big decision as nearly 30% of our traffic used IE browsers including IE6, IE7 and IE8. After making the required changes, we did notice traffic drop for about 4 months (which meant the revenues were down too). Visitors would visit the site and get an impression that the site is poorly designed. They'd then leave the site and never revisit.

However, the situation started improving after a long wait. We will have about 10% of visitors who use IE browser. IE's lack of support to standards has been headache of many web designers and we request you to immediately upgrade to newer versions of IE. Or better, get Firefox, Chrome or Safari.

CE looks the way it's meant to be on these browsers.

@Rahul: It's surprising, but many leading IT companies in India still use IE-6 + XP combination. Employees are not allowed to download FF/Opera/Chrome.

I hope people abandon IE and make FF/Chrome/Opera the preferred browsers.
