The problem belongs to fatigue loading. It states that a machine was run (combined) for 25.4hrs. Out of which, it was carrying heavy load for 20 hrs and light load for 5.4 hrs.
If the machine carries light load only, its life is 6hrs.
If it carries heavy load only, the find its life (L).
Use this relation.
(5.4/6)+(20/L)=1. ans=200Hrs.
(NOTE: You may next question that life of machine under heavy load should be less. However it is not always the case. It depends on machine and the type of load it is designed for. For this problem, only concentrate on given data.)
