  • Tata Motors, India's top brand automobile maker is said to be testing a new 3.0L diesel engine. We learn that the engine has been designed and developed at Tata's Engineering Research Center aka ERC in Pune. The aim of the new diesel engine will be to reduce the overall weight of the engine and make it more fuel efficient. While no detailed information is available as of now, we learn that it's a 4-cylinder engine with common rail fuel injection (CRFI) technology. The information was leaked to #-Link-Snipped-# by an anonymous company insider.

The engineering team at TATA working on the new engine is focussed on beating the emission norms. We do not know whether the engine is being developed with any upcoming platform in mind. We'll have to wait till we get further details from Tata. However, this new development may hint at company's plans to announce a new set of vehicles that use 3L engine. It the rumors we heard are true, we could may expect a Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour competitor in the Rs. 20-27 lakh segment.

Tata Motors has been putting focused efforts on developing environment friendly engines with cleaner powertrains. The company had demonstrated a 3.8 SGI aka sequential gas injection) TCIC CNG engine, a 5L dual fuel (CNG+Diesel) engine and a smaller, 0.8L 2-cylinder aluminum turbocharged intercooled CRD engine at the Auto Expo earlier this year. The official at Tata Motors have not commented on the development yet.

What do you think Tata Motors has on its platter for the Indian roads?

Tata is always trying invest a lot of money in research which had given fruitful results. Now going back to ecofriendly engines, It would be truly awesome if we get a competitor for ford and Toyota as said by Big K.
