SMART SENSING UNIT

Project Abstract / Summary : Smart home technology has been surging in popularity over the past decade. According to a recent poll, 46% of consumers believe that it is important that their current or next home has smart technology. Many smart home technologies are expensive to implement and require a thirdparty company to monitor and support the system. We decided to design a low-budget system that the consumer can build for under $100.
Our project was broken into a few different subsystems that we felt were important in a home automation system. The first subsystem was a motion detector that utilized a passive infrared sensor. This subsystem also included a buzzer that raises an alarm when motion is detected. The second subsystem was a smoke detector that is able to detect carbon monoxide.We chose this sensor because we felt this is the most common hazardous gas found in one's home.
Additionally, our system included smallscale temperature sensor LM35. To gain the knowledge from scratch, we selected a clone of Arduino - Induinox. Also, we have preferred direct LCD connections rather than using a shield.
HighLevel Design Rationale and Sources
Our goal for this final project was to design something that could be useful in everyday life. Many consumers are exploring various smart home technologies to make their lives easier. What many consumers do not know is that they do not need to purchase an expensive third-party smart home system. Many of the most useful smart home technologies can be built cheaply by the consumer. We determined that a motion detector, smoke detector, and temperature sensing are a few of the most necessary technologies that comprise a smart home. Here, we give our project's logic structure:
HARDWARE AND DESIGN: SUB SYSTEM 1: We have used LM35 temperature sensor to get a picture of our room temperature, both in celsius and fahrenheit. This information could be useful when we want to control the temperature. SUB SYSTEM 2: In order to detect any motion in room or particular area, we had make use of PIR sensor.The passive infrared sensor has three pins.Vcc, Gnd, the output pin. They are interfaced
with the ATMEGA processor in the INDUINOX board. Whenever ,motion is detected it is indicated to us with the help of an electronic buzzer. In addition to it, a LED also glows.

SUB SYSTEM 3: In this part,we have used MQ-7 gas sensor, which senses carbon monoxide. The
minimal amount of CO present in the air will be displayed.
SOFTWARE: Many, updated versions of Arduino are available. But, to be compatible with our Induinox board we have chosen ARDUINO-0022 version. CONCLUSION AND FUTURE VISION:
In future, all these subsystems could be put together or can be developed as smart phone applications. Many IOT projects can be done
based on this smart sensing concepts. It can also be expanded to have a control over the temperature. Thus, a smart sensing unit will lead to a smart home with bundles of automation technologies.
We have also worked to send the collected sensor data to IBM bluemix, so that it becomes an IOT project.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : Knowing our environment is very necessary for home automation. This is the reason to choose this project to monitor the various parameters of the atmosphere.So, we thought that this project is of prime importance.

Project Highlights : We have presented our original idea which will be very useful for monitoring our home environment.The motion detection can be used when we are away from our home, whereas the carbon monoxide sensor constantly displays the value of the gas in ppm.This keeps us informed about the gas level that is present surrounding us. As carbon monoxide is listed one of the hazardous gas this will surely help us to track the current level of gas and act accordingly.
