Bulk password theft has been a problem that has plagued many companies such as Adobe, Playstation Network, Talk Talk and Ashley Madison. Cyber criminals manage to find their way into the company’s password repositories to grab user credentials and often dump personal information on public domain. You might think that safe measures on the server side such as cryptography and two factor authentications on the client side would be effective measures to curb this menace but a London based start-up Sillicon SAFE thinks otherwise. The firm founded by Dr Will Harwood and Roger Gross have developed Password Protect which is an expensive hardware solution that can be installed in any company’s servers to prevent data theft.

The company likes to call their product “secure password authentication appliance”. They have developed the Password Protect on No-read hardware platform which means you can set a password against a username and verify it at time of log-in but you can never get username or password out. During authentication Password Protect sends only the verification and nothing else. Even if you are the database administrator you won’t be able to view the data. Password Protect does not run on any known operating system, database or software stack which means you cannot gain access through known vulnerabilities. Password Protect also does not run any external programs which make it immune to malware attacks.

The company is selling the Sillicon SAFE Password Protect at a whopping price tag of £100,000 or 96,70,244 Rupees with additional maintenance fees. The firm claims that their creation is foolproof and has initiated a hacker challenge where any individual who manages to steal 100 unencrypted passwords will be awarded with an Apple Watch. They claim that 2.5 million hacking attempts have been made on the Sillicon SAFE Password Protect but none of them have been successful.

The question that we put forth before our informed audience is this, Is the Sillicon SAFE Password Protect a panacea for cyber security woes?
