Siemens eHighway Concept On Electrifying Trucks and Highways

Global oil resources are depleting at a faster rate than ever before. When it comes to vehicle emissions, we often talk about cars, but the real big-gun to blame is the truck; trucks lead those charts. Goods carrier trucks amount to the biggest carbon dioxide emissions. As a solution to this, Siemens, the global powerhouse in electronics and electrical engineering, announced a concept termed as 'eHighway' at the 26th Annual Electric Vehicle Symposium in Los Angeles. This concept works on the lines of the electric trolleys ans thus the trucks and highway lanes are connected to overhead electric wires while in transportation.



Using eHighways technology, the trucks will be able to switch between electric mode and diesel mode, thereby facilitating less use of fossil fuels and reduced CO2 emissions. Siemens has already developed the infrastructure, software, hardware and drives required to make this concept work. The company is testing this in Germany and the pilot projects are being planned for the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to connect to cargo centers. Check out the video -
