Considering the increasing need for electricity and to boost industrial development in Qatar, the Qatar government is now about to start a much awaited power plant project. The total electricity generated in Ras Qartas would be 2730 Megawatts. With the country being a desert one, the problem of water persists. Hence the management has taken a novel decision of using sea water in the power plant project. The water required in the plant will be the normal sea water which will be later desalinated for usage. The water desalinated and consumed in such a way will be about 63 million Galleons. Ras Qartas is a mega project by the State of Qatar with the total cost estimates reaching $4 Billion mark.
The power developing project is situated in Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar. The company responsible for the functioning of this power plant âRas Girtas power companyâ (RGPC) has made a contract with General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), a state governed Electricity Company. The contract will be valid for the next 25 years, paving way for fast economic growth. RGPC is also trying to succeed in its bid to win a tender for electricity and water expansion project. The success would result in extra 550 Megawatts electricity being generated with an extra 35 Million Gallons of water to be desalinated.
The top brass of RGPC has suggested the use of modern equipments and technology so that whole plant runs efficiently with just 95 employees. The tremendous reduction in workforce would be feasible because of advanced technology available. Earlier even a 600 Megawatt plant used to require over 1300 work force for its smooth functioning.
In this strategic partnership, the three partners with their shares are Qatar Electricity and Water Company (45%), Non Qatari partners (40%) and Qatar Petroleum (15%). Faisal Obeid Al-Siddiqi, Vice-Chairman and CEO of RGPC was satisfied by the progress of the power plant until now. The only problem faced was the fall out of a Korean company supplying equipments during the recent Global financial crisis. RGPC however acting swiftly managed to find out another supplier ensuring that the project does not delay.
According to the contract, RGPC will supply electricity to General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) which will in turn use it in context of GCC Electricity link up system. The power plant being advanced in technology will prove to be a turning point in the history of power generation not to mention that it will also boost economic growth tremendously.
