Looks like 'Graphene' is the name these days. The carbon atoms forming hexagonal structure has unearthed several possibilities for humans. Engineers at MIT have created a new kind of photovoltaic cell using flexible graphene sheets coated with nanowires. The result is flexible and transparent solar cell which is also very cost effective. This tell us that your window panes would be possible sources of power generation.

Use of silicon in current generation of solar cells makes it costly to manufacture. The team says they are the first ones to demonstrate  graphene-nanowire solar cells without affecting the overall performance of the cell. The team believes that their innovation is not yet mature enough to find commercial applications, but the results they've achieved are encouraging.
