India's Fastest Supercomputer Will Be 61x Faster Than Sequoia. Getting Ready By 2017.

India is developing world's fastest 'Made In India' supercomputer by 2017 that will be 61x faster than IBM Sequoia - which currently holds the record. C-DAC has drawn a blueprint to develop petaflop and exaflop range of supercomputers, with a budget of about Rs. 4700 crores Indian Rupees. IT minister Kapil Sibal is understood to have forwarded the proposal to prime minister Mr. Man Mohan Singh.

IBM developed Sequoia currently holds the record with LINPACK benchmark rating at 16.32 petaflop/s, making it the fastest computer on the planet. It's about 55% faster than the Japanese Fujitsu K, which owned the crown until last year. FLoating Point Operations Per Second (aka FLOPS) is the measure of performance of supercomputers. One petaflop is equal to 1015 FLOPS. That's lot of zeroes, right?

At present, India's fastest supercomputer located at CSIR Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation stands at #58 in the list of top 500 super computers in the world. It's quite obvious that India's got ambitious plan to go 61 times faster than the current #1. Kapil Sibal has proposed to the PM that Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITY) should be given the task of overall coordination of supercomputing activities in India. C-DAC would be the in-charge of the development of the computer and related technology.
