IIT-JEE & AIEEE No More! Take XII Exams Seriously Now.

We don’t know how to react to this news - but ‘as expected’, IIT-JEE and AIEEE will be replaced by a single admission test to all engineer factories aka IITs, NITs and IIITs. What’s more interesting is that the XII exam marks will carry about 40% weightage. India’s HRD minister, Mr. Kapil Sibal announced the change of pattern today after chairing a meeting with the joint councils of IITs, NITs and IIITs. [IMG]

IIT senates were clearly against the new format that kills the famous IIT Joint Entrance Exam, aka the IIT-JEE; which was probably the toughest engineering entrance exams till date. For the admissions to the centrally funded institutes, there would be 40% weightage to class XII marks, 30% weightage to performance in the main test and 30% to the marks scored in advance test.

The admission to IITs will differ slightly. For IITs, there will be a filtering process. Board results and main test will carry 50% weightage each and only top 50,000 qualifying students will be allowed to write the advance test. Final selection to the IIT will then be based on the marks scored in the advance test. The students will get a rank for IITs and separate ranks for NIT and IIITs. To get a seat, student will have to give the choice for both and seat will be allotted based on the top choice.

The main paper will be multiple-choice question paper while the format of the advance test will be determined by the ‘Joint Admission Board’ (JAB) of the IITs. The JAB will completely control various tasks like paper setting, evaluation and preparing the merit list.

We’re interested in knowing what engineering aspirants and their parents think about this new format.
