What is IES or Indian Engineering Services Exam?

Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) conducts the Engineering Services Exam or ESE 2016 is an entrance exam for graduates who wish to work under the Government of India in the sectors of Power, Telecommunications, Railroads, Public works etc.

The examination consists of a written examination followed by an interview for personality test.

The recruited candidates at IES 2016 will be eligible for following categories -

1. Civil Engineering

Indian Railway Service of Engineers
Indian Railway Stores Service
Central Engineering Service
Military Engineer Service (Building and Roads Cadre)
Central Water Engineering
Assistant Executive Engineer
Survey of India Service

2. Electrical Engineering

Central Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Service
Indian Naval Armament Service
Military Engineer Service
Assistant Executive Engineer (in Ministry of Defence)

What is IES ESE 2016 examination date and schedule?

---- IES 2016 IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER -

Date of Notification - 27.02.2016
Last Date For Receipt of Applications - 25.03.2016
Date of Commencement of Exam - 27.05.2016
Duration of Exam - 3 DAYS

What is the admission criteria of qualification needed for taking the exam?

B.Tech/B.E or,passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India). or,
Obtained a degree/diploma in Engineering from such foreign University/College/Institution and under such conditions as may be recognized by the Government for the purpose from time to time, or
Passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India); or
Passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India; or
Passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November, 1959

Age-limit: 21-30 years on 1st August of the year of Examination.

What is IES 2016 Exam Application Fee?

Rs. 200 for - General/OBC candidates is Rs. 200
No Application fee for - SC, ST, PH and female candidates

Candidates can make payment through online mode or offline mode.
Online Payment Mode: Credit Card, Debit Card and Internet Banking.
Offline Payment Mode: E-Challan through any branch of SBI (State Bank of India)

How to apply online UPSC IES 2016 Application Form ?

Candidates need to scan their photograph and signature.
Now candidates should lo gin to UPSC website #-Link-Snipped-#
Fill up application form with all necessary details.
Check the all details carefully and press submit button.
Online application System will now generate the registration number.
Get the printout of the online challan and pay the fee to your nearest SBI bank.
Now visit the web portal again to finish the process.
Fill the challan number and registration number and press enter.
Take the print out of the system generated reference number/form for the future use.
That's it.

A lot of people are asking me about IES 2016 pattern change. Is there going to be a change in pattern of the engineering services examination?

Well, as far as the syllabus is concerned, there is no word about change as of now. It is going to be the same as earlier years.

The students who are passed in engg can only appear for this exam.?

Students in their last year of engineering (B.E. or B.Tech final year) can definitely appear for the IES 2016 exam. This has been made explicitly clear by the test conducting authority.

Students who have completed graduation and hold a degree can apply as well.

Engineering Services Examination 2016 tentative dates:
Preliminary exam: Objective paper I and II are 8th to 14th February.
Results of IES ESE 2016 could be declared by mid April i.e. 15th April 2016.
Mains of ESE could be on 3rd weekend of July.
Interview for engineering services 2016 may be conducted between 1st November to 15th December 2016.

The official IES ESE 2016 dates are not yet out. We will update this discussion as soon as we have more information.

Hi Dinesh, I've heard the rumors too. However, there is no official confirmation regarding that change in IES ESE 2016 pattern from the official authorities as of now.
I will update the discussion here as soon as I find more information.

However, I did hear about major pattern change. From the PDF that I have attached at the end of the first post here.

The proposed new scheme for Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is as follows:
Part A - Preliminary Examination: 400 Marks
Part B- Mains Examination: 600 Marks
Part C - Personality Test : 200 Marks

ESE 2016 Preliminary exam date: Second Sunday of February every year i.e. 14th February 2016.
Prelims

Objective Paper I - General Ability Test (100 Marks, 2 Hours)
Objective Paper 2- Engineering Discipline Test (300 Marks, 3 Hours)

IES 2016 Preliminary Test Results: 15th April 2016.
Successful candidates shall be required to apply on-line for ESE (Mains) by 30th May.

ESE 2016 Mains exam date: Two days, Between 15th- 22nd July

Day 1
Paper 3- General Studies (100 Marks)
Paper 4- General English and Rajbhasa (100 Marks, only qualifier)
Day 2
Paper 4- Engineering Discipline 1 (250 Marks)
Paper 4- Engineering Discipline 2 (250 Marks)

Personality Test : 1 Nov - 15th Dec (200 Marks)

As per the official UPSC IES notification, students with M.Sc degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communications, Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering are eligible for IES 2016.

Following is the UPSC 2016 Calendar.
It mentions that the IES 2016 is scheduled from 27th May.... somewhat similar to this year.... So can we infer that there is not going to be any change in pattern?

Probably No.You will be eligible only for ESE 2017 if the present regulation remains in effect. If you go through the official notification for ESE 2015, you will find that
You need to be at least 21 years old and not more than 30 years old as on January 1 of the Exam year. If the present regulation continues to remain in effect You will be 10 days short of 21 years on January 1, 2016. Age relaxations do exist as per regulations that are clearly specified in the official notification of the Examination and its relevant details. However, this notification has not been released yet for the exam in 2016 and rules can change with time.

If your age is between 21 to 30, then you're eligible. But keep in mind, there is no exam related to CS. You've to choose either one from Mechanical, Civil, ECE or Elecctrical.
I am pretty sure it gonna be steep ride, but anything can be done.

I really can't take the decision for you, as I don't know what your academic background is or what skills you have. You have to choose between - Computer, Electronics, Mechanical and Electrical All the best.
