IBM Computer Watson to Participate in Jeopardy Challenge
âJeopardy!â is the Americaâs most popular quiz show. Its popularity is due to the speed with which it poses unique challenges to its contestants.
The IBM Researchers and technical enthusiasts also called the IBMers have built a super computing system named âWatsonâ that can understand the complexities of human language and return a single, precise answer to any question.

IBM Watson
Watson, who is named after legendary International Business Machines President Thomas Watson, is a showcase of the company's computing expertise and research in advanced science.
Sam Palmisano, IBM Chairman and CEO says that, â<em>We expect the science underlying Watson to elevate computer intelligence; to take human-to-computer communication to new levels; and to help extend the power of advanced analytics to make sense of vast quantities of structured and unstructured data. For example, the Watson Deep QA technology could, in the not so distant future, provide critical, timely information to physicians to help diagnose and treat patients.</em>â
Watson has already won a practice round on the show against two top contestants, showing artificial intelligence has come a long way in simulating how humans think.
IBM says the ability to understand language makes Watson far more evolved than the IBM Super Computer Deep Blue that won against world chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997.
The biggest challenge for IBM scientists was teaching Watson to differentiate between literal and metaphorical expressions and understanding puns and slang.
An important and interesting point to note is that Watson is not plugged into the Internet. It has a database covering a broad range of topics, including history and movie scripts. And this makes the game more real to watch.
Countdown to the <em>Jeopardy!</em> Challenge has begun. The final challenge will be held on February 14th. Itâs just a month to go. It doesnât matter if Watson will beat the other contestants or not, the crux would be to know how well he answers, given the pun and slang used by the questions posers.
