Team of scientists have discovered a new form of material which is basically a unique form of carbon clusters with unusual mix of crystalline and disordered structure. The new super-hard material is capable of indenting diamond - one of the hardest materials known to humans.  The researchers created this new material by squeezing buckyballs, aka soccer-ball shaped carbon-60 molecules and Xylene [ C6H4(CH3)2 ] at a very high pressure, about 600k times the atmospheric pressure inside a device called diamond anvil cell.

There were several attempts to create such super-hard material before. The new material, created at Argonne National Laboratory is more interesting because it retained its super-hard nature even after the pressure was released. Scientists believe that the new material will find applications in electronic, mechanical and electro-chemical industries.

The new material has not been named yet. If you have a fancy name for this new material, post it in the comments.
