Deciwatt -  a division within design company Therefore in London, UK has developed something really incredible. Their project called GravityLight, co-invented by Martin Riddiford and Jim Reeves, manufactures light bulbs which are powered by gravity. Mind blown? Well, the concept used is to have a sack of sand gradually pull a piece of rope through a dynamo mechanism to generate electricity that powers LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). If you are scratching your heads thinking - what an incredible solution! Please do hold that thought. Because we loved this idea even more after finding out that  a mere three-second pull on the rope to raised the sack and kept the LED bulb running for up to 30 minutes!
The applications for GravityLight are best suited for India and Africa, the countries that don't have reliable electricity access. And this project aims to distribute such light bulbs for free to billions of poor people who currently rely on biomass fuels like kerosene, which can be really hazardous to health. Plus burning of Kerosene for lighting along has been producing 244 million tonnes of Carbon Dioxide annually.
And if you're thinking isn't solar powered lighting already a great solution in the developing countries? Well, for people with little food and no savings find batteries, panels too expensive and beyond the reach. Hats off for the concept! Here's a video -
