Graphene Coated Steel Is Rust Proof & Less Toxic

Sarbajit Banerjee, PhD, an assistant professor, and Robert Dennis, a PhD student at University Of Buffalo have made a significant progress in making steel rust proof by using #-Link-Snipped-# based composite as an alternative steel coating. Traditional steel coats contain hexavalent chromium, a probable carcinogen. The researchers found out that steel coated with regular varnish lasted for only a few days when immersed continuously in saltwater. However, by adjusting the dispersion and concentration of graphene within the composite, the researchers were able to keep the steel rust free for over a month. Now salt-water is an extremely harsh environment for steel and in real life; the steel would go for much longer duration.

India's Tata Steel is helping the researchers with their project through funds and offering to test larger samples. Researchers say that their product can be used with existing hardware of factories that specialize in Chrome Electroplating. Check out this short video :
