Glasses-Free 3D Movie Theater Will Soon Be A Reality

When people go to a theater to watch a stereoscopic 3D movie, the thing about which they complain a lot is polarized 3D glasses. They may not fit your face properly or they may have scratches on them due to improper use. But a team of researchers led by Professor Byoungho Lee at the School of Electrical Engineering, Seoul National University in South Korea have decided to remove 3D glasses altogether. In a research paper published in Optical Society’s journal Optics Express they have described two methods in which they can implement 3D that can be viewed in wider angles for audience seated in a theater. The first method is to place a series of slats in front of the screen to polarize the light being directed toward the viewer which makes the image appearing on the screen three dimensional. The researchers used a screen coating polarization material known as quarter-wave retarding film to achieve this 3D effect with front projection video.

Concept Of The Proposed Configuration

The second method was to implement a pinhole array coated with the same quarter-wave retarding film to change the polarization of light as they pass through the pinhole array. These methods are still in their conceptual form and they haven’t been perfected for wide spread use, so don’t expect this technology to arrive soon at a theater near you.
