Forts of valour

It is just a bizarre idea which just occurred to me. We have a lot of forts which have looked to make our nation safe. These forts are not only symbols of valor but also have excellent constructional features. I ask all of you to contribute to this thread and post information about famous forts and historical monuments of your country. I appeal you to remain technical and give constructional features.

Let us start with the most difficult one. This the only fort which no Chhatrapati could ever conquer.
This fort is situated 165Km from Mumbai. The main constructional feature of this fort is that it is made entirely in sea. This a marvel which no one has ever could solve. Even being in the sea, this fort has a pond of fresh water which can be used for drinking purposes.

The fort has 19 rounded bastions, still intact. It is made in such a way that no one could ever come near it without getting detected.

    Fort Drum (El Fraile Island)
It is also known as the “concrete battleship,” is a heavily fortified island fortress situated at the mouth of Manila Bay in the Philippines, due south of Corregidor Island.

Originally it is a barren rock island, it was leveled by U.S. Army engineers between 1910 and 1914.It is then built up with thick layers of steel-reinforced concrete into a massive structure roughly resembling a concrete ship. This fort was topped with a pair of armored steel gun turrets, each mounting two 14 inch guns. Searchlights, anti-aircraft batteries, and a fire direction tower were also mounted on its upper surface. The 25-to-36-foot-thick (7.6 to 11 m) fortress walls protected extensive ammunition magazines, machine spaces, and living quarters for the 200-man garrison.

Kumbhalgarh is located in Rajasthan; precisely in its southern part. It is situated at about 105Kms to the west of Udaipur. It is quite a unique and an interesting destination, which attracts tourists from not only all over the country but also all across the globe. The location of Kumbhalgarh has always given it an added advantage as far as history is concerned. This fort was virtually inaccessible in the 15th century. Rana Kumbha of Mewar designed this fortress. He designed this great defensive fortress on a hill, which was situated at a height of 3,500 feet above the earth's surface, which is approximately 1100 metres high. The person standing on the fort can easily see the approaches made by any individual from Ajmer and Marwar.

Sindhudurg (Sindhu = sea, Durg = fort) was built by the great Maratha warrior leader Shivaji in 1664. Shivaji selected the strategic rocky island location, 'Kurte' for the fort himself, to counter foreign forces, and to keep the nearby Siddis of Murud-Janjira in check.

Over 4000 mounds of iron were used in the casting and foundation stones were firmly laid down in lead. The construction was started on 25 November 1664. It took 3 yrs to be built. Its total area is about 48 acres with a two-mile (3 km) long rampart, and walls that are 30 feet (9.1 m) high and 12 feet (3.7 m) thick. The massive walls were designed to serve as a deterrent to approaching enemies and to the waves and tides of the Arabian Sea. The main entrance is concealed in such a way that no one can pinpoint it from outside.

(1)There are three sweet water reservoirs in the middle of the Arabian Sea where the fort is built, and even if the water in the nearby villages dries in summer, but these wells do not dry; there is always water in them.

(2)There is a coconut tree which has a branch, if you see a coconut tree it will never have a branch but this tree not only has a branch but also gives fruit.

(3)There is a passage which is hidden in a temple which looks like a water reservoir, this passage goes under the fort for 3 kilometers, and 12 kilometers beneath the sea, and from there 12 kilometers in a nearby village which was used as a rescue door if the enemy entered the fort; this way was for the women to move out.

(4)The entrance gate cannot be seen from anywhere, and unless you are not a regular visitor, and if you are not and you are trying to enter thru a boat which is the only possible option apart from air, you would bang at the rocks around the fort which can't be seen to a naked eye, hence you have to be very familiar with the fort to enter.

Gingee Fort also known as Chenji or Jinji in Tamil Nadu, India is one of the few surviving forts in Tamil Nadu, India, which is more popular for its temples than forts. Purandar: "Purandar" literraly means Indra or The king of Gods.It is situated 10kms south-west of Saswad and 40kms south-east of Pune . Its height above sea-level is 1398 metres and about 700 metres above the plain at its foot. It really comprises two fortresses: Purandar, the stronger and more important of the two, and Vajragad. Purandar has two parts: the upper or Balekilla with precipitous sides all around and the lower part or machi about 300 metres above the plain. On the north side of the lower part there is a broad terrace comprising the cantonment area of the fortifications.
It was here that the famous treaty of Purandar was signed between Chhatrapati and Mughals and Chhatrapati had to surrender 23 forts. However they were recaptured within a short span of 4 years again. This is such a well built fort that no one could ever win it. It was always surrendered in a treaty but not in a war. The construction is marvelous and a wonder in modern world too.

    Fort Denison
    [IMG]
This fort is a former penal site and defensive facility occupying a small island located north of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney Harbour, New South Wales, Australia.
They used 8,000 tonnes of sandstone for the construction of this fort from nearby Kurraba Point, Neutral Bay. The tower's walls are between 3.3 metres and 6.7 metres thick at the base and 2.7 metres thick at the top. However, developments in artillery rendered the fort largely obsolete by the time it was completed. The tower itself had quarters for a garrison of 24 soldiers and one officer. Fort Denison's armament included three 8-inch (200 mm) muzzle loaders in the tower, two 10-inch (254-cm) guns, one on a 360-degree traverse on the top of the tower and one in a bastion at the other end of the island, and twelve 32-pounder (15-kg) cannons in a battery between the base of the tower and the flanking bastion. In 1913 a lighthouse beacon built in Birmingham, England, and shipped to Sydney, replaced the 10-inch (25-cm) gun on the roof of the tower. The light is called Fort Denison Light.

Keep an eye on constructional features. That is important. Try to understand how it was made impregnable. I am showing the top view so that you will have an idea of this triangular fort. Constructional features are amazing! 😀

    Forts in Maharashtra

Nowhere in the country would you encounter such a profusion of forts. And such variety. Sited on an island, as at Murud-Janjira or guarding the seas as at Bassein, or among the Sahyadri hills, as at Raigad, whose zig-zag walls and rounded bastions sit like a sceptre and crown amidst hills turned mauve.

Most of the forts in Maharashtra whether up in the hills or near the seas are associated with Shivaji --the great Maratha warrior and an equally great fort builder. Moreover, these forts were treated as mini-cities, such as Panhala, which is now a hill station. The concept of the fort-city was, however, not peculiar to Shivaji alone. The Portuguese who came to India as traders and missionaries, built within a century of their coming, Bassein, a garden city to rival many a European capital.
