FastStitch is a prototype suture designed by the biomedical engineering students at the Johns Hopkins University. Sewing up an incision is one of the most challenging tasks in any major operation performed on the chest or abdomen. FastStitch has been designed to address this problem by making it easier and safer to perform surgical stitchings. The FastStitch holds the fascial layer between its upper and lower arms and then with the aid of the spring, it allows the suturing needle from one arm to the other, piercing through the muscle. While doing so, it drives the surgical thread to perform stitching. The instrument prevents the needle from slipping and it's so precise that it allows the stitches to be placed about a centimeter apart. Check out the video demonstration of FastStitch below -
