Facebook & Microsoft Just Shook Hands Over MAREA - To Lay 6500 Km Long Underwater Internet Cable

Facebook and Microsoft shook hands to build a massive internet cable to be immersed under the North Atlantic Ocean, which will go from the United States of America all the way to Spain. The project, named Marea which means Spanish for tide, will be made up of optical fibre. The cables of Marea project will begin from Virginia in USA, going all the way up to Bilbao in Biscay, Spain through the North Atlantic Ocean. That would be nearly 6500 kilometres under the ocean!

Facebook has been looking forward to make a larger footprint in the tech sector, whereas Microsoft is working hard to preserve its share. Facebook clearly expressed their interest to develop internet services and Virtual Reality technologies to an unexpected magnitudes, in the F8 event held this year. Meanwhile Microsoft, right from the day it announced Azure head Satya Nadella as its CEO, has been looking forward to rule the cloud computing business. Although Microsoft already has a lead over other companies with a great experience, it is looking for even developments of their products. Last year, Microsoft was reportedly testing underwater datacentres, in an attempt to cut-off the costs required to cool the datacentres.

Marea will harness the optical fibre technology to get a bandwidth as high as 160 Terabits per second (Tbps) per second- that's nearly 160 million Mbps! The project will be managed by Telxius, a subsidiary of Telefonica. Construction will begin in August this year, and will be completed in 2017. Surely, this project will be a great asset to the companies, once completed.
