Bangalore's traffic may soon become more bearable with lesser pollution, because zero emission electric buses will soon have their own share in Bangalore's traffic. BMTC aka Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation is currently testing 'Made In China' electric buses. BYD (Build Your Dreams) K9 bus is currently waiting for an approval for road test from the officials in a bus depot. TheNewIndianExpress reports that BMTC officials will test run the K9 buses for a period of 3 months before making a decision to purchase these buses in bulk.

BYD, the Chinese company manufactures K9 electric buses. The bus can cover ~250 km on a single charge under typical city driving conditions. The weight of the bus is about 18 tons and houses four Ferrous batteries, each with a capacity of 540 volts. The batteries take about 6 hours to go from zero to 100% charge, so that can be charged overnight.

There are several advantages of the electric buses. The K9 will operate at Rs. 4 per km on city roads and are typically zero maintenance. These buses are low noise buses and are designed for comfort. One of our main complaints about buses made in India is that they don't even consider disabled people. The K9 buses have a special wheelchair ramp for those who need it and are fully air conditioned. We learn that there's solar charging option available but couldn't locate detailed information about it.

Do let us know your opinion about electric buses. Do you think electric buses will make people use public transport more over their own vehicles?

    This is really great. 👍
    I think that a range of 250 km is quite practical for buses. When it comes to electric vehicles, the major challenge faced is what they call 'Range anxiety'.
    Most public transport buses are out on the road for twelve hours or sometimes even more in a day. India does not have charging station facilities either.

    BYD (Build Your Dreams) Auto - the company that's manufacturing electric buses worldwide must have done its official entry in India through Bangalore.

    I wonder if any Indian companies are considering to manufacture such vehicles. ☕

    Update:

    The first bus has officially been commissioned to run on Bangalore Roads. The fare for travel from Majestic to Kadugodi is Rs. 80. The charging point for the bus is at Majestic and it's expected that the BMTC will launch a few more buses covering the airport route as well.

    As we wrote in our article earlier - the bus will do about 250 km once the battery is fully charged - making it ideal to run on city roads. The battery takes about 6 hours to charge.

    The cost of the bus itself is Rs. 2.7 crore; but note that this is one of its kind and the first one in India. BMTC might sign up the deal with BYD - the Chinese makers of this bus for bulk purchase.

    If you happen to travel in any of these buses; do share the photos of bus interiors 😀

    Update:

    The cost of the bus itself is Rs. 2.7 crore;
    The price difference between the BYD Coaches & Volvo Coaches is b/w 80 Lacs - 1 Cr but, the running cost of e buses would be somewhere between Rs.7-8 /Km as compared to Rs 14/Km for Diesel Vehicles. This will Surely gonna reduce the cost per passenger for BMTC.

    According to BMTC this vehicle is on trial basis for first three months. During which it will be tested on actual ground & will be checking its feasibility.
    Well as far as speed it is concerned it is very much similar to its VOLVO Counterparts.
